When the Rain Comes

The building I live in is old.  Also, there is a storm happening. (Right now!)  And I found myself tossing & turning in bed as the curtains flapped wildly against the screen, convincing myself I couldn't close the windows because I have never closed them since moving in and why would this morning be any different?

I will refrain from turning this into some sort of philosophical metaphor for old things and leaving things open or forcing them to close and just say this: I was able to shut the windows.

Everything was still okay.

two odd ducks

i won`t tell you that i know more people than i think i do.
or that my grandpa`s violin has been carelessly stowed in the guest bedroom for over 4 years now.
you`ll never get me to slip that i hurt &ache &find joy just like the next person does.
but i will confess that i do feel, i do fight, &i`m not certain of what happens next.

The Nap

Red cap, red cap, red cap,
Snug on your curled hair.

Blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes,
All close eventually, lashes flutter.

Red plaid, red plaid, red plaid,
Loose round your soft waist.

Folded hands, folded hands, folded hands,
‘Cross your murmuring chest.

Blue jeans, blue jeans, blue jeans.
Sun-faded and torn on a barbed wire fence.

White shoes, white shoes, white shoes,
Mildewed laces dribbled in rain-puddles.

Lazy hammock, lazy hammock, lazy hammock,
Inspired the taciturn dreamer to sleep.

long night

tossing &turning,
unable to rest soundly,
peacefully frustrated and furiously I
check the clock
teasing me:
there are only four [three!] hours till light.
"Good night, socks."

to where have You wandered, little lamb?
let me gather You up in my arms
&carry You safely to the fold
of sweet dreams,
well-rested sleeps,
&little hearts proudly beating.

i think that perhaps, what if, oh, nevermind.

You dance as eloquently as you speak, I said, but it is time now for you to go under the hill.
Thank you for the waltz &teaching me the two-step.
